Personal holiness is often misunderstood as our actions to achieve rather than the action of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Saint Pope John Paul II wrote that the call to holiness is both a gift and a task. More recently, Pope Francis in Gaudete et Exsultate (On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World) has written “The Lord asks everything of us…He wants us to be saints and not to settle for a blind and mediocre existence. (1) This call is addressed “to each of us….The important thing is that each believer discern his or her own path.”(10-11)
